The US Military Armed Forces Veterans Memorial in Franklin Park was officially dedicated on Veterans Day, November 11, 2000. The Memorial is located on the 9500 block of Belmont Avenue, across from the Franklin Park Police Department. Eugene Piltaver was chairman of the memorial committee, which worked on the project for several years in conjunction with former Village President Dan Pritchett. Resident landscape architect Ronald Daye designed the 10-foot, semi-circular memorial.
Any individual who has resided in Franklin Park and served in any branch of the military is eligible to have his or her name listed on the memorial. There are pillars for each branch of the service (see Army and Navy examples), from the Spanish-American War to the War in Vietnam. There is also a pillar which describes each war the U.S. has been involved in and the dates that war was declared and ended.
The Traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial, presented by the Village of Franklin Park, was displayed in Hammill Square, May 19-30, 2003.
